La memoria del Binario 17
The semicircular window on the station’s façade announces Track 17, a one-way track whose final destination did not allow for a return journey. The window corresponds to the light filtering through the station’s large curved canopy, beneath which appears the entrance gate to the Dachau concentration camp. On either side of the track, the stones of the ballast are painted with the colors of the identification triangles sewn onto the uniforms of the various groups of deportees. On the railway sleepers, a quote by Primo Levi: “Understanding is impossible, but knowing is necessary.”
This representation of memory is meant to invite silence, contemplation, and reflection on human nature.
